چکیده

Background Altered aortic hemodynamics associated with bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) have been implicated in the development of aortopathy in patients with congenitally altered valves[1]. Most studies have focused on the most common “right-left” bicuspid aortic valve (RL-BAV) fusion pattern [2]. This study assessed the effects of valve morphology on aortic 3D blood flow in cohorts with the most common RL-BAV fusion, less common right-noncoronary (RNC-BAV), and normal trileaflet valves.

Bicuspid aortic valve is associated with altered wall shear stress in the ascending aorta.

BACKGROUND Hemodynamics may play a role contributing to the progression of bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) aortopathy. This study measured the impact of BAV on the distribution of regional aortic wall shear stress (WSS) compared with control cohorts. METHODS AND RESULTS Local WSS distribution was measured in the thoracic aorta of 60 subjects using 4-dimensional (4D) flow-sensitive magnetic resona...

From unicuspid to quadricuspid: the impact of aortic valve morphology on 3D hemodynamics

Methods In-vivo aortic 3D hemodynamics were evaluated by MRI in 17 patients with unicuspid (n=3), bicuspid (n=9, 3 true bicuspid, 3 right-left (RL) coronary leaflet fusion, and 3 right-non (RN) coronary leaflet fusion), trileaflet (n=3), and quadricuspid aortic valves (n=2). Valve morphology and dynamics were assessed using 2D CINE MRI. Aortic blood flow was measured using ECG and respiration s...

Response to letter regarding article, "Bicuspid aortic cusp fusion morphology alters aortic three-dimensional outflow patterns, wall shear stress, and expression of aortopathy".

BACKGROUND Aortic 3-dimensional blood flow was analyzed to investigate altered ascending aorta (AAo) hemodynamics in bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) patients and its association with differences in cusp fusion patterns (right-left, RL versus right-noncoronary, RN) and expression of aortopathy. METHODS AND RESULTS Four-dimensional flow MRI measured in vivo 3-dimensional blood flow in the aorta of ...

Aortic Valve Stenosis Alters Expression of Regional Aortic Wall Shear Stress: New Insights From a 4‐Dimensional Flow Magnetic Resonance Imaging Study of 571 Subjects

BACKGROUND Wall shear stress (WSS) is a stimulus for vessel wall remodeling. Differences in ascending aorta (AAo) hemodynamics have been reported between bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) and tricuspid aortic valve patients with aortic dilatation, but the confounding impact of aortic valve stenosis (AS) is unknown. METHODS AND RESULTS Five hundred seventy-one subjects underwent 4-dimensional flow m...

Nature versus nurture in bicuspid aortic valve aortopathy: more evidence that altered hemodynamics may play a role.

There is no disease more conducive to clinical humility than aneurysm of the aorta. 1 —William Osler B icuspid aortic valve (BAV) is a common congenital cardiac malformation affecting 1 to 2% of the population with a predilection for males. 2 Although patients with BAV often develop aortic aneurysms requiring surgical intervention , 3,4 the formation of aortic aneurysms is variable and there ar...
